In solidarity with the students and staff of Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig (Walpole Island Elementary School) who wear orange shirts every Wednesday, members of the Listening, Learning, Relationship Action Table (the Truth and Reconciliation Committee of the Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes) and the Parish Staff will also be doing the same.
The origin of the Orange Shirt comes from the story of six-year old Phyllis Webstad, a former residential school student. On her first day of school, her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her. For more information go to the Orange Shirt Society webpage at orangeshirtday.org.
The orange shirts worn by the Parish Staff and members of the Listening, Learning, Relationship Action Table were designed by MinoGiizhgad, the co-ordinator for the Ojibwe classes at Walpole Island Elementary School (BK). The design has a feather and the word “Debwewin,” the Ojibwe word for “truth” – for without truth there is no reconciliation.
Parishioners can order the same shirt for $15 at the parish office (located at St. Agnes Parish).
