Members
We have a sincere desire to make some positive contributions to promote understanding of the history of this land. The Truth part of Truth and Reconciliation is the first step before we can reconcile with Colonial history and present social/political policies. Hopefully our Resources will help bust some myths and give some context to our understanding of our own Truth and Reconciliation journey.
The History of Listening-Learning-Relationship Action Table
Letter to the Faithful from Bishop Fabbro - December 8, 2021
In part: “I noted, at the same time, the need for all of us in the Diocese to take part in concrete action to work diligently towards truth and reconciliation. We need to recognize the truth that Catholic communities were involved in past abuse and move to reconciliation to offset the effects of the abuse, seeking ways of working with local Indigenous communities to bring about healing. As I said in my apology, “I commit the Diocese of London to accompany you, the Indigenous Peoples of this land, on the journey of healing and reconciliation. I realize that there is much more work to do in our Diocese, but I know that ‘we look forward to listening and learning from you as we walk in solidarity’” (27 September 2021).”
In this letter of December 8, 2021, he announced the formation of a committee entrusted with guiding all of us on the path to truth and reconciliation.
Fr. John Jasica's announcement of parish committee - July 3, 2022 “The Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes has formed a Truth-Reconciliation & Friendship Committee that will help all of us grow in a deeper understanding of the past seeking ways for true healing and friendship with our Indigenous brothers and sisters. This will include opportunities for education, listening and getting to know one another. I see this as an important chance for us to foster new relationships that will bless us and strengthen us as faithful and loving disciples.”
Fr. John Jasica's outline of the committee's purpose - June 18, 2023 The main purpose of this committee is to help us as a family of parishes understand:
(1) the history and truth of our Indigenous communities in Canada and the difficult and painful past relationship with the Catholic Church and the Canadian government
(2) following the direction of Bishop Fabbro and in response to the recent papal visit of Pope Francis to Canada—seek reconciliation and healing with our Indigenous brothers and sisters
(3) create opportunities of renewed friendship and understanding with local Indigenous communities sharing the best of who we are so that we can mutually support one another as friends along the journey
